Fossil fuels Flashcards
What are fossil fuels?
Fossil fuels are hydrocarbons. ( This contains only the elements carbon and hydrogen) This is formed from the remains of dead plants and animals over a million years. e.g. crude oil
What are examples of fossil fuels
Coal oil gas( natural gas is a source of energy- used for heating cooking
Why are combustion reactions examples of an oxidation reaction?
Because you are adding in oxygen to the fossil fuel e.g. coal
What is an equal equation?
An equation that’s got the same number of atoms on the reactants and the same number of atoms on the products.
What do you get when coal burns?
Carbon dioxide
What is an oxidation reaction?
Any reaction where oxygen is added
what is a reduction reaction?
Any reaction where oxygen is lost.
