Allegory
a continued metaphor , a symbolic narrative, its a story
ex. allegory of the cave by Plato
Anaphora
repetition of the same word or group of words at the beginning of successive clauses(broke up by commas/periods)
antimetabole
the repetition of words in successive clauses, in revers grammatical order. ex. if you fail to plan, you plan to fail
antithesis
the juxtaposition of contrasting ideas, often in parallel structures
ex. Thats one step for a man, one giant leap for mankind
antanaclasis
repetition of a word in two different senses. Repetition of a word or phrase whose meanings changes in the second instance
ex. working hard or hardly working?
apostrophe
addressing a person or abstraction that is absent from the situation and cannot physically be there
ex. Hello Mr. Sun!
Assonance
the depiction of similar VOWEL sounds followed by different consonants in the stressed syllables of adjacent words
ex. The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain
Auxesis
magnifying the importance of something by giving it a disproportionate/more sophisticated name
ex. Someone referring to a scratch as a wound
Chiasmus
a reversal of grammatical structures in successive clauses or phrases (does not repeat words)
ex. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere
Erotema
asking a question not for the purpose of an answer but for the purpose of confirming or denying something
its just a rhetorical question
Isocolon
elements that are similar in structure and length
es. I came, I saw, I conquered
Litotes
opposite of Hyperbole
A form of understatement in which a sentiment is expressed ironically by negating its contrary
ex. saying its not the best weather today during a hurricane
Metonymy
The word for one thing is used to refer to something related to that thing
ex. saying the crown in reference to the king or queen
Oxymoron
the joining of terms normally contradictory
ex. bittersweet
Paradox
an apparently contradictory statement that never less counters a measure of truth. Similar to an Oxymoron but it is more of a turn of meaning in the whole statement as opposed to a turn in meaning of juxtaposed words
ex. The first rule of fight club is don’t talk about fight club
