- people gain self esteem and a sense of belonging to a group
- people tend to feel they belong to the ‘best’ group and so they think negatively about other groups (bullying)

- it is natural human behaviour to categorise people into groups based on characteristics we belive they have in common eg. blondes are dumb

- our frustration over something leads us to unfairly blame an innocent person/people… which in turn leads to discrimination toward this group
