FORENSIC, Eysenck criminal personality Flashcards
What did he propose
That personality can be through two dimensions: introversion/extroversion and neuroticism/ stability
what did he later add
that there is a third dimension to personality which was psychoticism and sociability
what is the origin of our personality
is biological in origin, take the nature approach and is due to the type of nervous system that we have
-type of nervous system we have = type of criminal we are
what are the three innate personality types of criminal
extrovert neurotics psychotics
explain the nervous system for the three innate personality types of a criminal
- extraverts- Underactive nervous system, always seeking excitement and stimulation, take a risk taking behaviour, do not respond to punishment and are re-offenders
- neurotics- reactive nervous system, mainly in the sympathetic nervous system and respond quickly to threat, tend to be nervous jumpy, over anxious, criminal behaviour is difficult to predict
- psychotics- have a high levels of testosterone, aggressive and an emotional so they lack empathy
what do the criminal personality types come from
socialisation which is defined as how we are brought up, he believed criminal behaviour is immature selfish and childlike
What did he see criminal seeking
Instant gratification as a lack of patience, socialisation teaches children about instant gratification
what do people with high extravertism in neuroticism lack
patient and seek instant gratification, we cannot condition them so they cannot be punished and they reoffend
what did he measure criminal personality types using
EPQ (or EPI)
self report questionnaire on extroversion neuroticism and psychoticism scores
