FORENSIC, cognitive distortions Flashcards
Cognitive distortion meaning
Errors in information of processing by faulty biased way of thinking, we perceive ourselves, other people, the environment in the world in an inaccurate or negative way
two examples of cognitive distortions are
hostile attribution bias and minimalisation
Hostile attribution bias
in ambiguous situations, you interpret actions of other people in an aggressive way when in reality are they are not
-offenders misread non-aggressive cues which can trigger a criminal act
Research
researchers had 55 violent criminal shown ambigous photos, when compared to non-aggressive group, they were likely to perceive the photos as violent and hostile
Hostel attribution bias comes from where
childhood, researchers found that when children were shown ambiguous provocation, those identified as aggressive prior the study interpreted this as an aggressive act
Minimalisation
type of deception where you downplay/deny the significance of an event or emotion, this is a common way of dealing with a guilt as studies shown that individuals who commit sexual offences are prone to minimalisation)
