forensic anthropology Flashcards
What is the recovery process for bioarcheology and forensic
1) locate and map
2) excavation, mark datum point
3) careful removal
What are the two main questions asked before forensic analysis
1) is it human? primates have wide bones, longer forelimbs, longer pelvises
2) how many: MNI- minimum number of individuals
What are the 3 goals of forensics
1) estimate time since death
2) create a biological profile
3) personal identification
what components are used to determine time since death
- stage of decomposition
- insects
- temp/humidity
- location/depth
- materials
How is age determined?
- teeth
- calcification levels- cranial fusion, caps on bones, cartilage calcification
- size/proportion
- wear on bones
what are the 5 steps of a biological profile, and how is each determined
1) age
2) sex-
3) ethnicity/origin- population statistics
4) height- formula using tibia or femur
5) biological particulars ( trauma, pathology, occupation)
what are the key differences between bioarcheologists and forensic anthropologists
Bio archeology:
-ancient remains
-reconstructing past lifeways
Forensic:
50 years or less
personal identification
ONLY SKELETAL
