help to establish a time frame of when the individual died
- to estimate time since death
- to distinguish human from non human agents of bone modification

ID by exclusion
- evenyone else is identified
- no evidence to contrad
- biological profile (ancestry, sex, age, stature)
- antemortm
Positive Identification (finger prints, x-rays, ect)
- antemortem and postmortem data match exactly
Positive Identification Methods
- Odontolgy
- x-rays (sinuses)
- medical/ surgical treatments
- unusual/ unique osteological traits
- DNA
main goal is to assist with law enforcment in unsolved crimes
