Forearm Flashcards
Where is the principal attachment of the forearm?
Through the ulnar
What direction are most fibers oriented in the forearm?
They are oriented superior to inferior from the radius, allowing force to transfer over
What is the principal attachment of the forearm?
The ulna
What is the antebrachial fascia?
It is the deep fascia of the forearm and it is a continuation of the brachial fascia of the arm. It will form the flexor and extensor retinacula
What is the extensor retinaculum?
It is the fascia that extends across the carpal joint from the anterior border of the radius to the triquetrum and pisiform bones
What is the flexor retinaculum?
It is the transverse carpal ligament. It is attached to the pisiform and the hook of hamate. It forms the carpal tunnel and the canal of Guyon
What kind of muscles does the posterior side of the forearm have?
Smaller, flatter muscles because extensors are smaller and less tone than flexors
What kind of muscles does the anterior side of the forearm have?
Large, more toned muscles; flexor muscles which are twice the size of the extensors
What are the superficial muscles of the anterior forearm?
The pronator teres, flexor carpi radialis, palmaris longus, flexor digitorum superficialis, and flexor carpi ulnaris
What is the common origin of the superficial muscles of the anterior forearm?
The medial epicondyle from the humerus
What nerve innervates the superficial muscles of the anterior forearm?
All the nerves are innervated by the medial nerve except for the flexor carpi ulnaris, which is innervated by the ulnar nerve
What are the deep muscles of the anterior forearm?
The flexor digitorum profundus, flexor pollicis longus, and pronator quadratus
What nerve innervates the deep muscles of the anterior forearm?
The median nerve
What are the superficial muscles of the posterior forearm?
Brachioradialis, anconeus, extensor carpi radialis longus/brevis, extensor digitorum, extensor digit minimi, extensor carpi ulnaris
What nerve innervates the superficial muscles of the posterior forearm?
The radial nerve
