Companies that are trying to do social good - not very high profit

What are cooperatives?
A
- people pay money to be members, so they get services
- democratic - the members can vote
- members are kind of investors
- very small staff

What are Financial Cooperatives?
A
- kind of a bank
- the loans are with very low interest rates
- don’t charge so many fees
- only local, small, can’t give big loans

What are Housing Cooperatives?
A
- Housing assotiations
- the residents pay a monthly fee
- they try to kepp the house clean (painting, gardening)
- democratic - voting

What are Worker cooperatives?
A
- everyone who works there is a shareholder in the company
- even more democratic
- don’t sell shares on the market
- if someone leaves they buy them out
- hard to fire people

What are Producer cooperatives?
A
- connected to farms
- pay a fee when joining
- help the farmers to sell, storage, they can rent equipment

What are Consumer cooperatives?
A
- Pl: Hungary: Metro, USA: Costco
- pay a fee and then you can come and shop cheaper
- they buy huge amounts -› lower prices

A
- kind of a bank
- they handle smalll loans
- 5-10 years
- low interest rates
+ for people who want to start their ideas
+ get access to something for which banks wouldn’t give otherwise
