plantar, medial heel pain
pain often worse after first steps of the day
aching quality with prolonged standing
Who typically gets plantar fasciitis?
middle-aged, somewhat overweight patient
runners
(most common foot problem, can happen to anyone)
What is the treatment available for plantar fasciitis?
stretching (esp the calf- gastroc and soleus, achillies) to release strain on plantar fascia
night splint
cushioning with appropriate shoes, activity modification, weight loss, heel cushions or inserts
PT: soft tissue mobilization, U/S, taping
casting to hold in stretched position
PO NSAIDS
What is the prognosis for plantar fasciitis?
tends to resolve slowly, often times several months
eventually over 95% will have adequate symptom relief over 6-12 mo
surgery may be indicated if patient also has caves foot
What is important to remember about the healing of a 5th metatarsal fracture?
vascularity is best at the mid shaft and at the base, in between is difficult (Jones fracture)
