Extensor Digitorum Brevisand Extensor Hallucis Brevis attachments and actions
Attachments:
calcaneus, inferior extensor retinaculum
digitorum: tendons on dorsum of digits 2-4
hallucis: tendon on dorsum of digit 1
Action:
assists long extensors in extending digits
Abductor hallucis
medial tubercle (or process) of calcaneal tuberosity, flexor retinaculum, plantar aponeurosis
medial side of base of 1st proximal phalanx
abducts and flexes 1st digit
Flexor digitorum brevis
medial tubercle (or process) of calcaneal tuberosity, plantar aponeurosis
both sides of middle phalanges of digits 2-5
flexes digits 2-5
Abductor digiti minimi
medial and lateral tubercles of calcaneal tuberosity, plantar aponeurosis
lateral side base of 5th proximal phalanx
abducts and flexes digit 5
Flexor hallucis brevis
plantar surface of cuboid and lateral cuneiform
base of 1st proximal phalanx
flexes proximal phalanx 1st digit
Quadratus plantae
(medial and lateral parts of ) plantar surface of calcaneus
tendon of flexor digitorum longus
Action:
assists flexion of digits 2-5
Lumbricals
tendons of flexor digitorum longus
medial side of extensor expansion of digits 2 – 5
Action:
flex proximal phalanges and extend middle & distal phalanges of digits 2-5
Adductor hallucis
oblique head: bases of metatarsals 2-4.
transverse head: plantar ligaments of metatarsophalangeal joints (MtP) & deep transvers metatarsal ligament
lateral side of base of 1st proximal phalanx
adducts 1st digit, assists maintenance of transverse arch
