What does the Biuret Test test for?
Test for protein.
What does the Iodine Test test for?
Test for starch.
What does the Benedict’s Test test for?
Test for glucose.
Describe the test for Starch.
Iodine test.
Add iodine to food sample.
Colour change: orange to blue/black.
Describe the test for Protein.
Biuret test.
Add potassium hydroxide solution to solution of food.
Add 2 drops of copper sulfate solution.
Colour change: blue to purple
What does the Emulsification Test test for?
Test for lipids/fats.
Describe the test for lipids/fats.
Emulsification test.
Dissolve a small sample of lipid in ethanol.
Add solution to solution of food in a test tube 3/4 full of cold water.
White cloudy layer forms on top of the water.
Describe the test for Glucose.
Benedict’s test.
Add Benedict’s solution to solution of the food.
Put in boiling water bath for 5 mins.
Colour change: blue to brick red
Green- a little
Orange- medium amount
Red- large amount
