Cells Flashcards
What is the difference between Animal and plant cells?
Plant cells have Chloroplast, a Vacuole and a Cell Wall and animal cells don’t.
Nucleus function
Controls activity in the cell (by making proteins) Contains chromosomes (DNA)
Cell membrane function
Controls what enters and leaves the cell (selectively permeable)
Cytoplasm function
Where chemical reactions occur
Mitochondria function
Respiration
Ribosomes function
Synthesise proteins from amino acids
Chloroplasts function
Photosynthesis
Cell wall function
Made of cellulose
Keeps cells in a fixed shape
Vacuole function
Filled with cell sap
Stores dissolved sugars, mineral ions
Red blood cell
Contains haemoglobin
No nucleus
Biconcave shaped
Sperm cell
Flagellum to swim
Many mitochondria for energy for swimming
Acrosome - package of enzymes to digest jelly around the egg
Palisade cell
Many chloroplasts to trap light energy
Tall and thin to pack together tightly so more light is absorbed
What is the difference between eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms?
Eukaryotes have a proper nucleus and other organelles with outer membranes.
Prokaryotes have genetic material in the cytoplasm instead.
