What is the benedict test for?
Reducing sugars
Benedict Test
-Add 5cm^3 of sample into test tube
-Add 10 drops of Benedict solution
-Add to 75 degree water bath for 5 mins
Benedict Results
No reducing sugars: Blue
Reducing sugars: Green, Yellow, Red
What does the iodine test?
Carbohydrates/Starch
Iodine Test
-Add 5cm^3 of sample into test tube
-Add iodine solution (turns brown)
-Shake test tube gently
Iodine Test Results
No starch: Brown/Orange
Starch: Blue/Black
What does the buiret test do?
Tests for proteins
Buiret Test
-Add 2cm^3 of sample into test tube
-Add 2cm^3 of buiret solution (turns blue)
-Gently shake
(potassium hydroxide + copper sulphate)
Buiret Test Results
No protein: Blue
Protein: Purple
What does emulsion test do?
Tests for lipids
Emulsion test
-Add 2cm^3 of sample to test tube
-Add 2cm^3 of ethanol
-Add 2cm^3 of distilled water
-Shake
Emulsion Test Results
No lipids: Clear
Lipids: Cloudy White
