Ecology and the Enviroment Flashcards
Ecosystem
A dynamic system made up of a community and all the non-living factors of its environment
Community
All the populations of it’s different species living and interacting in a particular place at the same time
Population
The total number of individuals of one species in a particular habitat at a particular time
Habitat
The place where an organism lives and is characterised by the physics conditions and other organisms present
Abiotic Factor
A non-living factor, light, temperature
Biotic Factor
A living factor, preditation, food availability
Abiotic Factors
- Temperature and pH, effects enzymes
- Light intensity and water conc of soil, effects photosynthesis
- Humidity, transpiration
- Magnesium, nitrates, phosphate concentration in soil, (chlorophyll, proteins, growth)
Two ways to sample in an ecosystem
- Use random sampling
- Use a transect
Pyramid of Number
Show the number of each organism counted in the ecosystem
Pyramid of mass
Show the amount of mass of each organism in each tropic level
How much energy is transferred between one topic level and another?
10%
Names in different dropbox levels
- produces
- primary consumers
- secondary consumers
- tertiary consumers
- decomposers
biodiversity
The variation of plant or species
Effects of greenhouse gases
melting polar ice capes
destruction of habitats
increased extreme weather
spread of disease
