How do you test for sugar?

A

You use a benedict’s solution. you add it to the substance and boil in a water-bath. it turns brick red if it is fully positive. there are different colours to find out how much sugar it has. follow the colours of the rainbow until you reach blue which means there is no sugar present

How do you test for starch?

A

You add iodine to the substance. it turns blue/black if starch is present otherwise it will appear as orange/brown

How do you test for protein?

A

You add biuret’s solution to the food. it turns purple if it is present otherwise it will appear as blue

How do you test for fat?

A

There are two ways to do this:

-You rub the substance against baking paper, if there is grease the substance has fat

-You add ethanol to the substance to dissolve it and add water. if fat is present, it will turn white otherwise it will appear colourless
