Food Flashcards
What are functions of carbohydrates
Source of quickly available energy and fibre for metabolic activity
Give examples of disaccharides
- sucrose
- maltose
- lactose
What are some sources of proteins?
Meat, fish, egg whites, milk and seeds
Give an example of an anabolic reaction
Photosynthesis, protein synthesis
What are triglycerides made up of
Glycerol and three fatty acids
What are the 5 elements in dissolved salts
Sodium, Chlorine, Calcium, Potassium and Magnesium
Give an example of a fat soluble vitamin
Vitamin D
What is the structural role of lipids?
Phospholipid as component of cell membranes, protective by insulation and cushioning
How many different types of amino acids are there?
20
What elements are lipids made up of?
Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
What percentage of the human cell is water?
80%
What is the function of phospholipids and are they storage or structural?
They make up cell membranes - structural
What are some sources of vitamin C?
Citrus fruits, vegetables,
Where can animals get calcium from?
Milk and cheese
Explain the tes for protein
- Add distilled water to one test tube (control)
- Add a food sample eg. milk to another test tube
- Add a few drops of biuret solution to each
- The initial colour should be blue, turning to violet/purple if protein is present
What is the metabolic role of proteins?
Enzymes as biological catalysts, hormones as regulators of metabolic activity
Define enzyme
Biological catalyst, that changes the rate of reaction without being used up in the reaction itself
What is the metabolic role of lipids?
Primary source of energy for metabolic activity
What are the three trace elements needed in small amounts
Iron, Copper and Zinc
Why do we need nitrogen?
To make proteins eg. enzymes and hormones for us
What are catabolic reactions?
Reactions that break down complex molecules into simpler molecules and release energy in the process
What are the 6 common elements
Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Phosphorous and Sulfur
How are amino acids joined together?
Peptide bonds
What are two minerals needed by plants?
Calcium and Magnesium
