Q

How many types of kame are there? (what are they?)

A

Three types.
Kame terraces, Kame deltas, crevasse kames

Q

What are kame terraces?

A

The most extensive. Infilling of a marginal glacial lake or stream. Generally better sorted material. Can be identified as ridges on the side of a valley

Q

What is a kame delta?

A

Smaller than kame terraces. Form mound shaped hills on valley floor as meltwater streams enter a marginal lake. Share similar sediment patterns to river deltas

Q

What are crevasse kames?

A

Occur as meltwater streams enter the glacier through surface crevasses. Material is deposited on the valley floor under the glacier, forming a small hummock

Q

What are kettle holes?

A

During deglaciation, ice sheets break up and leave blocks of ‘dead ice’ which leave depressions in the ground when melted.

Q

What are eskers?

A

Generally aligned parallel to the glacial ice flow. Formed as a result of meltwater streams flowing subglacially

Q

What is an outwash plain?

A

A.K.A - Sandur
In summer, when ablation is dominant process, retreating glaciers deposit sand, gravels and clays. As streams exit the glacier, energy is lost and therefore material is deposited. Braided streams found here
