Fluids and Electrolytes Flashcards
INTRACELLULAR FLUID
Fluid found within the body cells that contains solute vital to the metabolic processes of the cells.
EXTRACELLULAR FLUID
Fluid found outside the cells
OSMOSIS
Movement of water across cell membranes from less concentrated solution to more concentrated solution
DIFFUSION
Intermingling of molecules in liquids, gases, or solids
FILTRATION
Movement of fluid and solutes together across a membrane from one compartment to another
ACTIVE TRANSPORT
Substances move across membranes
FLUID INTAKE
2500ml/day
FLUID OUTPUT
1400-1500 ml/day
SODIUM (Na+)
Controls, regulates water balance
-Normal serum level 135-145 mEq/L
POTASSIUM K+
Vital for skeletal, cardiac, smooth muscle function
- Normal ICF level: 125-140 mEq/L
- Normal serum level 3.5-5.3 mEq/L
CALCIUM Ca2+
Vital in regulating muscle contraction and relaxation, neuromuscular function, cardiac function
- Normal total serum calcium level: 9-11 mg/dL
- Normal ionized serum calcium level: 4.25-5.25 mg/dL
MAGNESIUM Mg2+
Protein, DNA synthesis
-Normal serum level 1.5-2.5 mEq/L
CHLORIDE CI-
Major component of gastric juice
-Normal serum level 95-105 mEq/L
PHOSPHATE PO4-3
Essential for functioning of muscles, nerves, RBCs
Normal serum level 2.4-4.5 mg/dL in adults
BICARBONATE HCO3-
Produced through metabolic processes in sufficient amounts to meet body needs
