Fluids Flashcards
Osmosis
Movement of water molecules across semi-permeable membrane from lower to higher solute concentration until equilibrated. Passive process.
Osmotic pressure:
force with which water passes through membrane separating solutions of different concentrations.
Diffusion
Movement of solute molecules from higher to lower concentration until equilibrated.
Occurs in liquids, gases and solids.
Passive process
Hydrostatic Pressure
Pushing force of water, in a fluid compartment, exerting pressure against membrane wall.
Oncotic Pressure
Osmotic (pulling) pressure exerted by plasma colloids in solution. usually 25mm Hg
Natriuretic Peptides
Natural antagonists to RAAS
Produced in response to high blood volume & high sodium.
Function:
Suppresses excretion of aldosterone, renin & ADH;
decreases action of angiotensin II;
Promotes excretion of sodium & water
