Fluid flow and bernoulli 7 Flashcards
1
Q
what is a fluid?
A
gas or liquid
2
Q
what are the different types of flow?
A
- ideal flow
- laminar/steamline flow
- turbulent flow
3
Q
ideal flow
A
no friction between adjacent layers (no viscosity)
gases approximate this(don’t always follow)
4
Q
laminar or streamline flow
A
- friction between adjacent layers (viscosity)
- flow is fastest at the centre of pipe
5
Q
turbulent flow
A
- no orderly adjacent layers
- as velocity increases, the flow changes from streamlines to turbulent
eg. cigarette smoke
6
Q
what is the flow rate (Q)?
A
Q= the volume of fluid passing a point per unit of time
7
Q
what are the 3 forms of energy of a moving fluid?
A
- kinetic energy (due to movement
- potential energy (due to its height
- pressure energy (due to a pressure difference)
8
Q
Bernoulli principle
A
- if velocity is reduced, the pressure in that region is increased
- if velocity is increased –> the pressure in that region is reduced
9
Q
fast velocity
A
low pressure (reduces pressure int he space making it higher pressure on the other side)
10
Q
slow velocity
A
high pressure
