Flucloxacillin Flashcards
drug classification
narrow spectrum antibiotic
penicillin
B-lactam
chemical structure
contains a beta lactam ring
resembles tetra peptide chain
brand name
floxapen
fluclox
bioavailability
50-70%
used to treat
bacterial infection caused by gram positive bacteria
mechanism of action
binds to transpeptidase which is a penicillin binding protein inside the bacterial cell wall
inhibits 3rd and last stage of cell wall synthesis
prevents the PBPs from cross-linking the D-ala-D-ala chain on a tetra peptide
what happens when there’s no cross linking in peptidoglycan
wall becomes weak
cell lyses occurs by autolytic enzymes such as autolysins
hydrolyse mucopeptide polymers in bacterial cell wall
if they attempt to divide their cell walls will collapse
kill them
side effects for normal penicillins
D&V
nausea
skin reactions
hypersensitivity
thrombocytopenia
side effects of flucloxacillin
gastrointestinal disorders
allergy presenting as a skin rash
anaphylactic reactions, hypotension, bronchospasm
