Floor of the Mouth and Tongue Flashcards
What is the name of the deepest part of the cheek?
Buccal sulcus
What is the name of the deepest part between tongue and teeth?
Lingual sulcus
What is the name of the mucosa tightly adhered to the periosteum of the bone?
palatal mucoperiosteum
What artery runs over the angle of the mandible?
facial artery
What gland lies under the mylohyoid muscle?
superficial part of the submandibular gland
What muscle lies posterior to the mylohyoid muscle?
Anterior belly of digastric
What glands lay superior to the mylohyoid muscle?
- sublingual gland
- deep part of the submandibular gland
What muscles lay superior to the mylohyoid muscle?
geniohyoid muscles
What gland anterior to the ear?
parotid gland
What supplies parasympathetic secretomotor to the submandibular and sublingual glands?
Chorda tympani
What is the chorda tympani a branch of?
Trigeminal nerve - CN VII
What are the 5 functions of the tongue?
- formation of food bolus
- pushing the food bolus to the back of the oral cavity ready to be swallowed
- keeping the mouth clean
- speech
- tasting and sensing food
What is present in the posterior 1/3rd of the tongue?
lingual tonsil under mucosa
What nerve supplies the posterior 1/3rd of tongue?
Glossopharyngeal - CN IX
What nerve supplies the anterior 2/3rds of the tongue?
general sensation - CN V3 lingual nerve
taste sensation - CN VII via lingual nerve and chorda tympani
What are the 4 types of papillae on the tongue?
- vallate
- foliate
- filiform
- fungiform
What cranial nerve lies between the internal carotid artery and internal jugular vein?
Hypoglossal nerve - CN XII
When does the hypoglossal nerve pass to the submandibular region?
after passing deep to the posterior belly of the digastric muscle
What does the hypoglossal nerve pass lateral to?
Hypoglossal muscle
What are the groups of the striated muscles of the tongue?
intrinsic and extrinsic
What is the function of intrinsic tongue muscles?
alter shape of tongue
What is the function of the longitudinal muscles of the tongue?
make tongue short and thick
What is the function of the transverse and vertical muscles of the tongue?
make tongue long and narrow
What forms the palatine aponeurosis?
tendons of tensor palati muscles
What are the intrinsic tongue muscles?
- styloglossus
- hyoglossus
- genioglossus
- palatoglossus
What are the intrinsic tongue muscles supplied by?
Hypoglossal nerve - CN XII EXCEPT palatoglossal (CN X)
What are the 4 extrinsic muscles of the tongue?
- genioglossus
- parts of lingual septum
- geniohyoid
- mylohyoid
What are the 4 extrinsic muscles of the tongue?
- genioglossus
- parts of lingual septum
- geniohyoid
- mylohyoid
How would you clinically test the hypoglossal nerve CN XII?
Ask patient to stick tongue straight out.
If both nerves are normal, the tongue should stay straight.
If one is damaged the tongue tips towards the side of injured nerve.
