Flight Controls Flashcards
What is the Difference between Normal mode and Direct Mode?
Direct Mode removes the FCM and there are no higher level functions
Will speed brakes/ground spoilers work in Direct Mode?
No
Flight modes on the aircraft are?
Direct Mode and Normal Mode
The Roll Control system includes:
Ailerons and multi-function spoilers.
When the ELEVATOR is in Direct mode, the autopilot is unavailable. true/false
true
What is allowable takeoff trim?
green band on Trim EICAS
What do you lose when you go into direct mode?
Higher level functions of those flight controls
Can FCM Override pilot input?
no. The pilot always has control, the FCM augment (Increase, or enhance) pilot input thru higher level functions
Elevator Higher level functions?
Gain on Airspeed
Elevator thrust compensation
AOA imiting
In general terms what is direct mode?
The flight controls do not have Higher level functions, FCM is removed.
What are 3 FLIGHT CONTROLS MODE Buttons? what happens when they are pushed?
these are the flight controls that have higher level functions provided by the FCM, these buttons can be pushed in or out to disconnect FCM and thus higher level functions.
Would Loss of Airspeed data cause the flight controls to go into Direct Mode?
YES
Can the pilot select Direct mode?
yes by pushing in any Flight control mode button.
Will multifunction spoilers operate in direct mode?
only for ROLL
Is angle of attack limiting available in Direct mode?
NO
What is priority for the Trim?
Backup, captain, FO, FCM (auto trim) commands
The trim system is protected from a runaway by:
a 3 second timer that limits trim activator for more than 3 seconds.
What happens if only half of the respective trim switch is pressed for more that 5 seconds?
The switch is Deactivated… EICAS message “PITCH TRIM SW FAIL” aural warning “TRIM”
Which controls use Electric power instead of hydraulic power to actuate?
Horizontal stabilizer, flaps and slats
What two flap/slat positions have the same exact flap/slat positions
4 and 5
What is the difference between flap 4 and 5?
Flap 4 inhibits the landing gear aural warning on landing and flaps 5 does not.
What is normal flap/slat position for landing?
Flaps/slats 5 o FULL
When will speedbrakes automatically close, even if the level shows deployed?
180kts with flaps greater than or equal to 2, or high TLA
Which takeoff flap settings are approved?
1, 2 or 4
What are go around flap settings?
if flap 5 then flaps 2
if flaps full then flaps 4
How many FLAP/SLAT panels on each wing?
4- 1 Inboard of pylon, 3 outboard Pylon
If captain and FO controls are seperated, can they be reconnected?
NO
After disconnecting, the pilot of the non-jammed side retains control over which elevator?
on-side
what happens to “artificial feel” if flight controls are disconnected in flight ELEVATOR?
Artificial feel is Half normal load
What happens to “artificial feel” if flight controls are disconnected in flight AILERONS?
Captain - Normal Feel
FO- no feel
What happens when the STALL WARNING SHAKER CUTOUT 1 OR 2 Button pushed in?
cuts out the associated stick shaker control
After Landing if the throttles are moved beyond 60 degrees what will happen to the spoilers?
They Will retract
How are spoilers armed for landing?
Its automatic with WOW+wheel speed>45 or airspeed >60 and throttle <60 degrees
When do spoilers automatically retract?
wheel speed less than 45
There are trim switches on both control wheels, which has priority?
The Captains
Can full pitch, aileron or yam trim be obtained simply by holding the associated trim switch?
no, there is a 3 second cutout
