What is static training?
Active-Independent, using your own force to stretch.
Passive-Requires help of another person or object to stretch a muscle
What are the advantages of static training?
Reduces injury risk, reduces muscle soreness, easy to carry out and anyone can do it
What are the disadvantages of static training?
Overstretching could cause injury, can’t stretch certain muscle groups
What is Ballistic stretching?
Uses force of limb movement to stretch muscles beyond their natural range of movement. Fast and jerky movements
What are the advantages of Ballistic stretching?
Can be made sport specific, easy to carry out, anyone can do it
What are the disadvantages of Ballistic stretching?
Risk of injury, often performed incorrectly
What is Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation?
Passive stretching that develops flexibility, mobility and strength. Used in rehabilitation programmes where partner applies resistance for 6-10 seconds. Muscle is stretched and relaxed, with the aim that the muscle an stretch further the next time
What are the advantages of PNF?
Can be made sport specific, can rehabilitate an injured athlete, increases flexibility
What are the disadvantages of PNF?
Higher risk of injury, must be carried out by a specialist
