Flagella and Axial Filaments Flashcards
What are flagella?
Long filamentous appendages
Flagella are not present in all bacteria, but when they are present they have additional functions other than motility, 2
Binding to cells and substrates
Secretion outside of the cell
What are the three parts that make up the structure of the flagella? (proximal to distal)
basal body
hook
filament
What protein is the filament of the flagella composed of?
Flagellin
What is an atrichious flagellar arrangement?
no flagella present
What is a monotrichous flagellar arrangement
filament, polar
What is a lophotrichous flagellar arrangement?
Two or more filaments that are polar
What is an amphitrichous flagellar arrangement?
Multiple filaments on each end
What is a peritrichous flagellar arrangement?
Filaments distributed all around the cell
What structure is analogous to a flagella but is built into the membrane of spiral shaped bacteria?
Axial Filaments (striping on a cnady cane)
How do axial filaments create motion for spiral shaped bacteria?
Contraction in opposing directions causing the bacteria to rotate
What are the advantages of motility for bacteria?
Migration to areas where it has the best chance of survival and replication
Movement toward or away from a stimulus
Taxis
Movement based on chemicals
Chemotaxis
movement based on light
Phototaxis
