Fimbriae (pili) and Cell Walls Flashcards
What are Fimbriae (or pili)
Appendages that are short, thin & fibrous
Where are Fimbriae (pili) found?
On almost all Gram (-) Bacteria and
on some Gram (+) Bacteria
What is the function of Fimbriae or pili?
Adhesion to surfaces, other bacteria, and host cells
Some pili are used for a special type of motility called what?
Twitching motility
What are sex pili used for?
Cell to cell conjugation
What is conjugation?
Transferring DNA to another bacterial cell
What form is DNA usually in when transferred by conjugation?
Plasmid
What are the three functions of the cell wall?
Protect from osmotic lysis
Protection from physical insults/ trauma
Maintain shape
What is a bacterial cell wall composed of?
Peptidoglycans
What is the structure of peptidoglycan?
Carbohydrate backbone with peptide cross bridges and side chains
Which bacterial cell walls are thick and consist of multiple layers of peptidoglycan?
Gram Positive
Which cell walls contain Teichoic acids?
Gram Positive bacteria
Which cell walls have a thin (sometimes only one layer) peptidoglycan layer?
Gram Negative
Which cells have an outer membrane external to the cell wall that protects the cell from immune cells and damaging chemicals?
Gram Negative bacterial cells
What are the components of the outer membrane of gram negative cells?
Lipopolysaccharide (sugars = antigens & lipids= endotoxins)
