Fixed Bridges Flashcards
How many occluding premolar units are required for an adequate oral function in a shortened dental arch?
4 occlusal units (preferably in a symmetrical position)
What type of material are implants made from?
Alloplastic materials
What are the benefits of a resin bonded bridge?
- Minimal or no tooth preparation required
- No LA
- Reversible procedure
What are the disadvantages of a Resin bonded bridge?
- Aesthetics may be compromised by the shine through of metal retainers
- Debonding can occur
Compare the success rates between anterior maxilla and posterior resin bonded bridges
Anterior maxilla more sucessful than posterior
Comment on the survival of adjacent teeth when removable dentures are used to treat an endentulous space
Significantly lower survival rate when compared to no treatment and fixed prosthesis
Give some disadvantages of removable partial dentures
- Fit, retention, support and stability of removable dentures often unsatisfactory
- Increased plaque retention (high caries and poor perio)
- Often not worn
What would need to happen if a root canal was needed on an abutment tooth of a cemented fixed bridge?
A remake of the bridge as access prepartion weakens the underlying dentine and core
What are the requirements for an acceptable abutment tooth for a bridge?
- Teeth are structurally sound
- Teeth are in good alignment and position
- Previous restorations and endo treatment are satisfactor
- Roots and Bone are functionally adequate
What is an important feature a pontic has to have?
Passive tissue contact with a convex, smooth fit surface and aqequate space to facilitate cleaning
What is the most commonly used pontic design?
Porcelain fused to metal modified ridge lap design
