Effect of tooth loss Flashcards
1
Q
What is the purpose of a dental prosthesis? (4)
A
- Replaces lost tissues (teeth and bone)
- Restores normal function (eating, speech)
- Restores (or even improves) normal appearance
- Prevents undesirable effects of tooth loss, e.g. drifting, overeruption of teeth & tooth wear
2
Q
What are some disadvantages of fixed restorations? (8)
A
- Not suitable for long spans
- Don’t replace missing alveolar bone
- Not always permanent (eg. RBBs can de-bond)
- Adjacent teeth may need crown prep (damage?)
- Surgery required for implants (complications also)
- Treatment irreversible (except RBB)
- Failure can cause suffering (eg. implants)
- Some treatment costly or long appointments
3
Q
What are things you have to consider to see if denture abutment teeth are appropriate?
A
Pulp status
Periodontal status
Presence of RCTs and Posts
Presenece of restorations
4
Q
What are changes that may occur when natural teeth are lost? (8)
A
- Alveolar bone loss in extraction sites
- Remaining natural teeth can change position
- Occlusal plane changes
- Changes to dynamic occlusal schemes (excursive movements)
- Extra occlusal load on remaining natural teeth
- Changes to speech sounds
- Changes to facial appearance
- Patients feeling self-conscious with low self esteem
5
Q
What are some disadvantages of dentures? (6)
A
- Removable (associated with old age)
- Often less well tolerated by patients (bulky, loose or uncomfortable)
- Metal clasps often visible
- Plaque traps (caries/periodontitis)
- Ulcers/pain underneath sometimes
- Need maintaining (or replacing)
