FITSS & POSNER’S STAGE MODEL Flashcards

1
Q

The cognitive stage

A

Best way to learn is to have the skill performed in front of you so you have a rough idea of how you’re going to perform the same skill. As a learner, watching others perform allows you to identify successes and errors of the observed performer, and this visual feedback assists in correcting your own performance.

Understanding

Frequent and obvious errors
Inconsistency in terms of accuracy and success
Inefficient movement sequences
High atention demand
Rapid improvement in performance

Q

The associative stage

A

Once learners have an understanding of what they’re supposed to do, they must practice to become familiar with sequencing and timing of the movement. Key element is just practice, practice and more practice.

Practice

Fewer and less obvious errors
Some inconsistency in terms of accuracy amd success
More efficient movement sequences
Less attention demand
Improvements are less rapid
An ability to detect their own errors

Q

The autonomous stage

A

Better response times. Don’t have to process individual bits of information, instead they process larger chunks of information that occur without their attention.

Automatic

Rarely made errors
Consistently accurate and successful
Very efficient movement sequences
Little attentional demand
Improvements are subtle
The ability to multi-task
An ability to detect and correct their own errors
