fish farming Flashcards
why do we farm fish
fish stocks in the wild have been depleted
name 2 species of fish commonly farmed
salmon and trout
the fish, in the fish farm, eat
high lipid and protein food to promote rapid growth
how often and much are the fish fed, in the fish farm
small amounts often so it is all eaten
what happens if you put several species in one pond
interspecific competition - different species will compete for food - (place cover)
predation - carnivorous species will prey on other fish
so place species in different tanks/ponds or use nets to seperate them
what happens if you place too many individuals in one pond - fish farm
infraspecific competition - larger individuals will eat smaller ones
infectious diseases - parasites & pathogens spread quicker
seperate fish by size& age & add antibiotics to water to kill bacteria
how do fish farms affect the environment
fish can escape & interfere with local species reducing biodiversity or upsetting local ecosystem
excess feed&waste can cause eutrophication and a reduction in oxygen conc
where do you place the nets in the fish farm
above, in the pond and above the waste
- so no interspecific
- so no intraspecific
- no bacteria
what is a biological control you could use in the fish farm
add wrasse to eat sea lice
