fertilisers Flashcards
what are the two types of fertiliser
organic and inorganic
what is organic fertiliser
made from the faeces of a range of animals and compost from legumes
what is inorganic fertiliser
inorganic compounds carefully formulated for a specific concentration of a particular ion
advantages of organic
improves soil structure
greater range of minerals
releases over longer time
less cost - already available
advantages of inorganic
mineral ions release immediately
- fast acting
the contents are known
easy to apply
no pests
disadvantages of organic
slow acting - needs to be decomposed
more difficult to apply than inorganic fertilisers
may contain pests
disadvantages of inorganic
can lead to eutrophication as fertiliser is soluble
requires regular reapplication
