Fish! Flashcards
Agnatha (jawless)
ex). hagfish, lampreys
Gnathostomota (jaws)
sharks,fleshy-finned fish, bony fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
Gnathostomata subdivided
pisces (fish), tetrapods= legs, wings, includes snakes
Anamniotes
no amniotic membrane = all fish and amphibians
fishy are…..
aquatic, scales usually, fins, gill-breathing, ectothermic
CLASS MYXINI- HAGFISH
marine…only vertebrae in osmotic equilibrium with seawater. eel shape, scavenger
CLASS PETROMYZONTIDA- LAMPREYS
marine freshwater, eel shape, parasitic species attach to fish with toothed, jawless mouth, tongue rasps hole, and sucks body fluid!
CLASS CHONDRICHTHYES- SHARKS, RAYS, SKATES
skeleton of cartilage, mostly marine
sharks senses
Chemoreception (taste/smell) highly developed. Lateral Line system=canal system on sides and head, receptors sensitive to vibrations and currents. Ampullary organs of Lorenzini=receptors on head sensitive to electric fields produced by animals in close range. passive electroreception (not generating own electric field). Active electrolocation= conductive objects, concentrate the field and resistant objects, and the spread the field.
Shark’s diet
predatory, some filter feeders(whale sharks). Rays and Skates have platelike teeth for crushing mollusks, crustaceans, occasional fish
Sharks do not have….
swim bladders for buoyancy like bony fish do
Shark’s Reproduction
Patterns (among fish, reptiles) oviparous(egg laying), ovoviviparous(egg retained until birth), viviparous(placental nourishment until live birth)
CLASS SACROPTERYGII
Fleshy or lobe-finned, lungfish(paired fleshy fins, swim bladder modified into type of lung).
CLASS ACTINOPTERYGII-RAY FINNED FISH
Fins supported by cartilage or bone spines. OSTEICHTHYES=BONYFISH, General characterisitics: partially or completely bony skeleton, operculum(gill cover) increases water flow, respiration efficiency, swim bladder in many to control buoyancy, Respiration=countercurrent gill circulation, cutaneous respiration(ex. eels on overland tips, air gulped into vascular mouth cavity ex.carp
DIET OF ACTINOPTERYGII
carnivorous mainly, herbivores, filter feeders, omnivores, scavengers, and parasites all occur
