Who was in the first triumvirate?
Julius Caesar, Pompeius Magnus (Pompey the Great), Marcus Crassus
What did Pompey achieve in 67 BC?
He become the first person to receive Imperium Maius
Why did the triumvirate form?
All three had something to gain from it and have something the others need -
Caesar could repay debts and regain glory
Crassus could support future political figures who would repay him
Pompey needed the senate to recognise his work to take land
What happens in 53 BC?
Grassus at war with Parthian Empire - Army destroyed Eagles were captured Grassus killed Pompey and Caesar left
When was the Conquest of Gaul?
58 BC - 50 BC
Why did the conquest of Gaul happen?
Caesar wanted to become governor of Transalpine Gaul so he could pay of his debt after term as consul ended. Wanted military glory
What was Caesar’s disadvantage?
He didn’t know what was happening in Rome - Pompey and Crassus could be plotting against him. Worries that Roman public would forget him
What propaganda did Caesar use in Rome while he was away?
Bribery - parties, etc
