Firefighting Fundamentals Flashcards
What is the firefighter’s primary and secondary duty?
Primary is to save lives. Secondary is to extinguish fires and limit damage to aircraft, shipboard, airfield installed equipment, and/or airfield structures
What are the key elements in a fire?
Heat, fuel, oxygen
Explain the fire tetrahedron
Heat, fuel, oxygen, chemical chain reaction
What are the four classes of fire?
Class A- Creates ash (wood, cloth, etc…)
Class B- Liquids
Class C- Electrical fires
Class D- Metals
Extinguisher for class A?
H2O, AFFF
Extinguisher for class B?
PKP, CO2
Extinguisher for class C?
Energized- CO2, Halon, PKP, H2O
Deenergized- Treat as A, B, D
Extinguisher for class D?
H2O in a high velocity fog
What is AFFF?
Synthetic fluorocarbon, noncorrosive, never expires. 3% and 6% used.
What is not suitable for large fuel fires?
Water
What is Halon 1211?
Electrically nonconductive gas with no residue clean up
What is carbon dioxide used for?
Used for displacing oxygen as it is 1.5x heavier than air
What is PKP?
Purple K Powder, potassium bicarbonate. Extinguishes flames by breaking combustion chain.
