What is a firearm
A lethal barrelled weapon
A prohibited weapon
A relevant component part in relation to a lethal barrelled weapon
An accessory to a lethal weapon or a prohibited weapon where the accessory is designed or adapted to diminish the noise or flash caused by firing the weapon
Lethal barrelled weapon
A barrelled weapon which must be lethal (capable of causing injury which death may result) of any description from which a shot, bullet or other missile can be discharged with kinetic energy
Imitation firearm
General imitations
This is those of which have the appearance of firearms whether or not it is capable of discharging any shot, bullet or other missile
It needs to be separate and distinct from the person
Imitations of section 1 firearms
Those which have the appearance of section 1 firearms and which can be readily converted into such firearm
Prohibited weapons
These are firearms whether they are lethal barrelled or not
Items to discharge nitrous acids and gas
What is a relevant component part
It is a barrel, chamber or cylinder, frame, body or receiver or other mechanism for containing the pressure of discharge
Accessories to lethal barrelled weapons or prohibited weapons
Designed or adapted to diminish noise or the flash caused by firing the weapon
Needs to be on the weapon or used on the weapon on the defendants possession
Police powers for a stop search
Section 47
Constable may require any person whom he has reasonably cause to suspect of having with him in a public place a firearm with or without ambition or about to commit any relevant offence and to hand over this firearm or ammunition
Relevant offence - trespassing, resist arrest
When can someone never possess a firearm
A person sentenced to three plus years imprisonment can never lawfully possess a firearm, a person sentenced to three plus’s month but less than 3 years can possess a firearms 5 years after the date of their release
Section 16 of the firearms act
Section 16 makes it an offence to possess a firearm “with intent to enable another person to endanger life”
Shortening the barrel of a firearm
An offence to shorten to a length than 24 inches the barrel of any smooth bore gun other than one which has a barrel with a bore exceeding 2 inches in diameter
Which court must a person apply to, to have their prohibition removed in relation to a firearm
Crown court
What is ammunition
This includes any ammunition except
Cartidges containing five or more shot, none of which is bigger than 0.36 inches in diameter, Cartridges for an airgun, air rifle, air pistol
Blank cartridges not more than one in diameter
