When to do a safety precaution procedures: When and how

- At the beginning and end of every weapon lesson and range practice
- At the completion of operational duty, prior to storing the firearm in an equipment room or safe
- Before handling, stripping or cleaning a weapon
- Whenever the weapon is picked up or received from another person
- Whenever there is doubt that the weapon is clear
When do you use a firearm?

A member may only use a firearm, which includes sighting or levelling it:
- When they believe on reasonable grounds it is necessary to protect life or prevent serious injury and they are satisfied no other means are available; or
- To lawfully destroy animals
Why do you get a firearm?
A member or community constable is issued a firearm to –
- Effectively protect human life, and
- Lawfully destroy animals
Define a Firearm Incident
- A person other than a member or community constable takes up, carries, or possesses a firearm, indicating an intention or disposition to use it against anyone including themselves.
- A member or community constable draws or takes up a firearm in anticipation of using it offensively or defensively.
Firearm categories
Category A
A shot is discharged and death (including death by suicide) or a personal injury results.
Category B
A shot is discharged but there is no death or personal injury.
Category C
No shot is discharged

Who do you report a fire incident to?
A member must report any firearm incident they are involved in, regardless of whether a shot is discharged, to an Officer of Police responsible for the area in which the incident occurs.
