When to do a safety precaution procedures: When and how

  • At the beginning and end of every weapon lesson and range practice
  • At the completion of operational duty, prior to storing the firearm in an equipment room or safe
  • Before handling, stripping or cleaning a weapon
  • Whenever the weapon is picked up or received from another person
  • Whenever there is doubt that the weapon is clear

A member may only use a firearm, which includes sighting or levelling it:

  • When they believe on reasonable grounds it is necessary to protect life or prevent serious injury and they are satisfied no other means are available; or
  • To lawfully destroy animals

A

A member must report any firearm incident they are involved in, regardless of whether a shot is discharged, to an Officer of Police responsible for the area in which the incident occurs.

No.

A member or community constable must not shoot from a moving vehicle, or at a vehicle in an attempt to disable the vehicle, due to the risk involved.
