Fire Protection Flashcards
When will an ENG 1/2 OVERHEAT illuminate? ENGINE 1/2 FIRE?
When the temperature in the engine detector exceeds a predetermined limit. They will extinguish when the temperature is brought below the limit.
The engines have a dual loop fire detector. With the OVHT DET in the normal position, which loop(s) must detect the overheat for it to be indicated?

How will the crew know if a single OVHT DET loop has failed?
The OVHT/FIRE test is conducted. There is no flight deck indication normally
Switching the OVHT DET to either A or B does what?
Will indicate an overhead or fire if the selected detector indicates a fire. Single loop mode
What does the FAULT light on the fire panel indicate?
Both detector loops have failed and the overheat/fire detection system is inoperative
With the OVHT DET in either A or B and the FAULT light illuminates, this means what?
The selected loop has failed and the system is inoperative
What are the successful FAULT INOP test indications?

The WHEEL WELL fire warning light illuminates
The fire warning bell sounds
T/F: The wheel well fire detection and WHEEL WELL fire warning light only operate when AC power is applied to the aircraft
True
Holding the EXT TEST switch to position 1 tests the circuit continuity of squib ___ (1/2) on ____ (1/2/Both) engine(s) extinguisher bottle(s).
Holding the EXT TEST switch to position 1 tests the circuit continuity of squib 1 on both engines extinguisher bottles.
Holding the EXT TEST switch to position 2 tests the circuit continuity of squib ___ (1/2) on ____ (1/2/Both) engine(s) extinguisher bottle(s).
Holding the EXT TEST switch to position 2 tests the circuit continuity of squib 2 on both engines extinguisher bottles.
How is the APU squib tested with the EXT TEST switch?
The same squib is tested twice with the switch in position 1 or 2
The indications of an engine overheat are:
Both master cautions illuminate
The OVHT/DET annunciator illuminates
The related ENG OVERHEAT light illuminates
The indications of an engine fire are:
Both master cautions illuminate
The OVHT/DET annunciator illuminates
The related ENG OVERHEAT light remains illuminated Both master FIRE WARN lights illuminate
Related engine fire switch illuminates and unlocks
What can you do if an engine is indicating a fire and the related handle unlock does not work?
There is a manual unlock switch below the fire handle that will unlock the fire handle
The APU fire detection is powered by what?
APU fire extinguishing?
Can the APU fire extinguishing be activated without electrical power ON in the flight deck?
Detection: battery bus
Extinguishing: Hot battery bus
Yes
Will the APU automatically shut down if a fire is detected? If so, when?
Yes, always
The APU is a ____ loop system? Single/Dual
Single
What does the APU DET INOP light indicate?
The single loop has failed and APU fire detection is inoperative
Where is the remote APU fire control panel?
Right main wheel well
An APU fire is sensed, what is indicated on the remote APU fire control panel?
APU fire warning light flashes
The APU warning horn sounds (on the ground only)
What happens if you press the HORN CUTOUT button on the APU remote panel during a fire warning
The horn will stop and the fire warning light will become steady
Pulling the APU remote fire control handle does what?
Arms the APU BOTTLE DISCHARGE switch
Closes the APU fuel shutoff valve
Closes the APU bleed air shutoff valve
Closes the APU inlet door
Trips generator control relay and breaker
The flight deck indications of an APU fire are:
Both master FIRE WARN
lights illuminate
The fire warning bell sounds
The APU fire switch illuminates and unlocks
Pulling the APU FIRE switch does what?
Arms the APU fire extinguisher bottle squib
Closes the APU fuel shutoff valve and deactivates the fuel solenoid
Closes the APU bleed air valve
Closes the APU air inlet door
Trips the APU generator control relay and breaker
Allows the APU fire switch to be rotated for discharge
The forward cargo compartment has ___ smoke detectors while the aft cargo has ____ smoke detectors
Forward - 4
Aft - 6
When the cargo fire detector switch is in NORM, how many loops must detect fire to receive and indication?
Both loops for the respective cargo compartment
When will the DETECTOR FAULT light illuminate on the cargo fire panel?
When both loops in either cargo compartment have failed
The indications for a successful cargo fire test are:
Both Master FIRE WARN lights illuminate
Extinguisher test lights illuminate (verifies squib circuit continuity)
FWD and AFT cargo fire warning lights illuminate
Cargo fire bottle DISCH light illuminates
The DETECTOR FAULT light remains extinguished
The fire warning bell sounds
When will the DETECTOR FAULT light illuminate during a fire test?
When one or more detectors in a fire loop have failed
When will the cargo fire system indicate a fire?
When at least one detector in both loops detect smoke
What are the flight deck indications of a cargo fire?
Both master FIRE WARN lights illuminate
FWD or AFT cargo fire warning light illuminates
Fire warning bell sounds
How many cargo fire bottles are installed?
One per aircraft… Select 737-700’s have a second bottle installed to meter the discharge at a low rate.
When smoke is detected in the lavatory, what happens?
The lavatory call light located above the lavatory door and master lavatory call light flash
The passenger address system sounds a chime that cycles on/off
Red alarm indicator light on the lavatory smoke detector panel illuminates
The smoke detector emits an audible horn as long as smoke is detected
Describe the lavatory fire extinguisher
There is an automatic fire extinguishing bottle in the lavatory under the sink. The extinguisher has two discharge ports that melt at high temperatures and discharge into the lavatory sink compartment. There is no flight deck indication of a discharge.
Which wheel wells have fire detection?
Mains only.
No nose gear
What are the flight deck indications of a wheel well fire?
Both master FIRE WARN lights illuminate
WHEEL WELL fire warning light illuminates
Fire bell sounds
How can a WHEEL WELL fire be combated?
No fire extinguishing system… Lowering the landing gear increases airflow and cools the wheel well. Light will remain illuminated until temperature has decreased below set level
