Fingerprints Flashcards
3 Principles Of Fingerprints
-Individual characteristics
-Pattern will remain unchanged through an individual’s life.
-Distinct ridge patterns.
Fingerprint Classes
-Loops
-Whorls
-Arches
Loops
-Radial Loop - If the loop is going toward the forearm/thumb.
-Ulnar Loop - If the loop is going toward the pinkie or ulnar bone.
Arches
-Plain
-Tented
Whorls
-Plain whorl
-Double whorl
-Central pocket whorl
-Accidental whorl
Ridgeology
The study of the uniqueness of friction ridge structures and their personal identification.
Ridge Characteristics (E.g core, ridge, etc)
-Core
-Ending ridge
-Short ridge
-Fork or bifurcation
-Delta
-Hook
-Eye
-Dot/island
-Crossover
-Bridge
-Enclosure
-Speciality
*There can be scars too!!!!
Types of fingerprints found on any surface.
-Plastic
-Patent
-Latent
Plastic
Fingerprints left on soft surfaces such as paint, soap, dirt. Likely to be three dimensional.
Patent
Visible prints formed through blood, dirt, ink, paint, etc.
Latent
Prints formed when the body’s natural oils and skin and deposited onto a surface.
(Revealed using different techniques such as chemical reagents, alternate light sources and powders)
Fingerprint powder
Applied by brushing onto a surface and works by adhering to the oil and moisture components of the fingerprint - making it visible.
Ninhydrin
Reacts with the amino acids in the oil from the finger prints producing a blue-purple stain.
Cyanocrylate
Cyanoacrylate is a substance in superglue that, when heated, releases into the air as a gas. This gas is attracted to the sweat and oils from fingers and crystallizes to leave behind a white residue that reveals the fingerprint
