Acids and Alkalis Flashcards
What is a base?
A substance that neutralises acid. (Not all bases are alkalis, but all alkalis are bases.)
Alkali
A soluble base which produces hydroxide ions in aqueous solutions. OH-
-Bitter taste
-Feels slippery
-ph 7< (8-14)
-Does not corrode with metals
-Does not react with metals to create hydrogen gases and produce a compound.
-Turns litmus blue.
Acid
A substance that donates (protons) hydrogen ions in aqueous solutions. (H+)
-Sour taste
-Does not feel slippery
-Ph <7 (0-6)
-Corrodes metals
-Reacts with metals to produce hydrogen gases
-Turns litmus pink/red.
pH 7
Neutral
Neutralisation
Occurs (reaction) when the acidic and alkaline ions cancel each other out.
H+ OH- -> Hv2O (l)
How do we measure acidity?
-Using an indicator. I.E Phenol red, thymol blue.
-Universal indicator gives a measure of the amount of hydrogen ions present in a solution.
