Final: Respiratory Flashcards
Starts with flu like symptoms. Causes- Acute epiglottis, sinusitis, inner ear infection, trachea may suddenly close, acute meningitis. Serious strain- Serotype B Without treatment 90% fatal The #1 cause of children getting meningitis.
Hemophilus influenzae
More deadly. Grows in damp regions of the US. Seen most often in men. Grows in macrophage may spread to organs. Symptoms- night sweats, cough, mucus.
Histoplasma capsulatum
Lives in amebas; resistant to chlorine non-communicable
Legionella pneumophilia
Green membrane on throat. Remains local in oral cavity. Phage gene shuts down protein synthesis. May escape into circulation causing organ failure. Leading kid killer. Vacc available
Corynebacterium diphtheriae
Found at the root of tooth and jaw bone. Causes: Bone destruction
Bacteroides gingivalis
Causes: Loud cough, but mild whooping. Self limiting virus Use humidity for recovery Toxin- binds to cilia inhibits action
Parainfluenze virus “Childhood croup”
Heal well from Grows in Dry places Seen in men Causes night sweats, cough, mucus
Coccidiodes immitis
Virus starts in the upper respiratory tract. Spreads itself to other glands in the body without symptoms. Long infectious stage. Serious if goes to brain.
The Mumps
Found only in Immune compromised. Multiplies intracellular. Seen- 8 trophozoites in cyst Leads to a rapid deadly pneumonia
Pneumocystis carinii (jiroveci)
Starts- Cold symptoms, may have temp, lethargic, progresses to death by compromised breathing. 5000 babies die/ year Humans are reservoir
Respiratory syncytial virus
Called Walking pneumoniae Causes Malaise, cough Inhibits cilia causing cough 5% becomes focal to goes to heart Has no cell wall
Mycoplasma pneumoniae “Primary atypical pneumoniae”
Seen- Bright red sputum Multiples in macrophage until burst- causing inflamed tissue called tubercles (confirmed by x-ray). Spread to other organs. 1 yr treatment Last long in air
Mycobacterium tuberculosis
