REBT: Performance Vs. Personhood
○ Self-worth is not contingent on performance, degrees, trophies, possessions, titles, money, behavior, or the judgment of anyone. Worth is intrinsic to you as a human being (personhood) distinguished from all other forms of life
○ The person is not their behavior
REBT: Primary Focus
○ REBT focuses on helping people identify, evaluate, (Dispute) and modify dysfunctional cognitions
○ Thoughts, emotions, behaviors are interrelated, it views evaluating and changing thoughts as most effective route toward change of all three areas
REBT: Similarities between Ellis and Beck (or their approaches)
○ They both emphasize thoughts as leading to emotions and behaviors
○ Both try to make changes in the client’s belief system
○ Ellis–Irrational beliefs–uses ABCDEF method to challenge irrational beliefs of all types
○ Beck–cognitive distortions, using different methods for challenging distortions
REBT: Cognitive Triad
○ Cycle of: negative views about the world; negative views about the future; negative views
about oneself
REBT: View of Psychopathology
○ Irrational beliefs are the source of people’s disturbances
○ People have a biological tendency towards thinking dysfunctionally and believe life should go their way
○ Irrational beliefs/thinking:
■ Self destructive, avoidance of thought, procrastination, self-blame, endless repetition of mistakes
■ Self downing; hostility and rage; (self-criticism)
■ low frustration tolerance
■ Absolute musts and shoulds
■ Awfulizing; I-can’t-stand-its; damnation; all-ness/overgeneralization
■ Self-demanding/other-demanding/world-demanding
