Final Exam Essay Question Flashcards
What experiment did you participate in?
I participated in “Being you 2” and Nicola Katzman was the researcher
- what was the question that Being You 2 sought to answer?
Question: Does the need and self-perception of uniqueness actually change significantly from situation to situation, or do individuals have a fixed sense of uniqueness?
Topics of interest include: interpersonal relations, close relationships, conformity, and distinctiveness
The researchers hypothesized that at different points throughout the day, levels of self-perceived distinctiveness and need for uniqueness would vary significantly.
They also hypothesized that time of day will not consistently predict changes in uniqueness; rather, the types of social situations the individual experiences will be associated with differences in need and self perceptions of uniqueness.
- what was the methodology of the experiment:?
Using the daily diary experience sampling method, the experimenters texted out a survey, asking individuals to report on their self-perceptions and needs several times throughout the day. This method is referred to as a multilevel longitudinal data analysis.
The independent variables in this experiment were social situations, location, individual experiences and time of day while the dependent variables were self- perceived distinctiveness and need for uniqueness
- why the methodology was appropriate for answering that question
This methodology was appropriate because the study was observational rather than experimental, and had many layers, constantly changing independent variables, that coincided with one another to impact the participants sense of uniqueness and distinctiveness.
- How does this experiment relate to something else learned in the course.
This relates to situationism, the notion that human behavior is largely determined by the characteristics of the situation which translates into a person’s attributional style, the way he or she typically explains the things that happen in his or her life.
In this experiment, the way the participants construed the situation had a huge impact on self-schema
