FINAL EXAM (chapter 11) Flashcards
what is the (1) problem with self-esteem?
it’s a byproduct (consequence) of adaptive and productive functioning.
what is the motivational function of a possible self?
to link the “present-self” with ways-to-become the “ideal self”.
what do i need to do (steps i need to take) in order to advance myself to become my ideal self?
what is agency? and what is it motivated by?
this presents a view of the self that “acts” and that action is motivated by our psychological NEEDS (autonomy, competence, relatedness)
what is differentiation?
self becomes specialised on the basis of our interests and preferences. the self grows in “complexity”.
what is integration?
our specialised life integrates into a single sense of self. we integrate our self-schemas together with our social identity/roles.
what is the self-concordance? what is self-discordant?
concordance - if a goal reflects our inherent needs, interests. (intrinsic)
discordant - if a goal reflects a social obligation or social demand; rewarded or praised. (extrinsic)
to determine whether a goal is self-concordant or self-discordant what is the ONE QUESTION you must ask yourself?
WHY am I doing this?
concordant - I want to do it (inherent, feel good)
discordant - have to do it (extrinsic, pressure, anxiety)
personal strivings
this creates meaning in our lives and promotes growth. they don’t satisfy our inner psychological needs (extrinsic - money, fame) - this doesn’t create personal meaning in our lives.
it’s not the goals you attain rather it’s what you strive to attain.
what is self control?
this is the capacity to suppress and restrain our impulsive (short-term) desires and urges to pursue our long-term goals. the more willpower you expend in resisting temptation/impulses the less willpower you have thereafter.
