FINAL: Chapter 14 Replication, Transparency Flashcards
Three types of replication
Direct, Conceptual, and Replication-plus-extension
What is a direct replication?
When researchers repeat an original study as closely as they can. Particpants from the same population (NOT same sample), same materials + procedure
What is a conceptual replication?
Explore same research, but participants from different populations, different materials, different procedures (don’t have to be all of these, just has to be at least one)
What is a replication-plus-extension replication?
Repeat the original experiment, but add variables to test additional questions
What are 3 questionable research questions?
Underreporting null findings, HARKing (hypothesizing after results are known), and P-hacking (analyzing data in multiple ways until it becomes statistically significant)
What are transparent research practices?
Open science (sharing data so others can review and study the results) and Preregistration
