A patient in liver failure is not able to control ammonia levels which can lead to hepatic encephalopathy.
No more alcohol and provide patient with time to rest
Prevent bleeding (bleeding precautions: electric razor, soft bristled toothbrush, and pressure on all venipuncture.
Measure abdominal girth and preform daily wts and I&Os
Paracentesis (removal of fluid from the peritoneal cavity (ascites))
Liver transplant
DO NOT GIVE TYLENOL
Meds: antacids, vitamins, diuretics, lactulose (decreases serum ammonia through the stool), and avoid narcotics
