Context:The sinking of the Lusitania on 1915 was a defining moment for the United States during WWI. US had remained neutral but this event sent calls for war sweeping through the press.
Desctiption:This was one of the propaganda pieces showing an innocent women clutching her baby as they are sinking to the bottom of the ocean
Meaning:to evoke anger and urge people to enlist.

Context: During his re-election in 1916, President Wilson recognized the strength of anti-war sentiment.
Desctiption:Wilson ran for reelection on the slogan “He kept us out of war”. Wilson also reminded voters of his Progressive reform agenda. He also used “Peace with Honor” and “he proven the pen is mightier than the sword”.
Meaning: tried to show that while they weren’t at war, they still remained strong and fought for their rights. It was a close rase between Wilson and Hughes but Wilson won.

Context:After the US entered WW1, Wilson was expected to meet with Russian delegates to convince them to keep Russia in the war.
Desctiption: The militant suffragists decided to also greet the Russians with this sign.
Meaning:this was meant to turn Wilson’s words against him that his goal was to spread democracy while America was not democratic because women were not allowed to vote.

Context: During WWI tensions were high against Germans including the fear of spies. Some Americans took matters into their own hands attacking Germans.
Desctiption: Picture shows John Meints a German-American farmer after he was beaten, tarred, and feathered.
Meaning: Shows the emotions including anger that happen during a war.

Context: During WWI suddently a new vicious killer appeared killing many called the Spanish Influenza.
Desctiption: Picture shows a poster posted on a naval factory alerting to the dangers of spitting.
Meaning: The image tells us the Spanish Influenza has endangered the prosecution of the war in Europe and also shows the fear it caused.

Context: The Age of Flight has important significance in a time where machines seemed to matter more than people.
Desctiption: Picture of Charles Lindbergh flying the Spirit of St. Louis flying by the Eiffel Tower.
Meaning: Shows the pioneer spirit of the nineteeth century and played a part on American’s conflicting vision of the modern age.

Desctiption: Klan members with the American flag on the steps of the capitol without their masks.
Meaning: This equated patriotism with white supremacy and also shows how Klan members were unafraid to reveal their identities.

Context: During the twenties there was a debate about how to end racial attacks and segregation.
Desctiption: This picture shows Marcus Garvey in full military dress.
Meaning: Garvey founded the UNIA (Universal Negro Improvement Association to encourage economic and self-sufficiency by creating bacl-owned businesses.

Context: During the great depression United States was seeking solutions. FDR set out to try many different things to stimulate the economy.
Desctiption: The cartoon shows a patient laying unconsiously as doctors try different experiments on it.
Meaning: intended to send a message that the brain trust was performing risky and potentially painful economic experiments on our unaware country.

Context: During the great depression in the dust bowl, drought and soil erosion caused massive dust storms across southern and plain states.

Meaning: gives an indication as to why dust storms were suffocating and potentially lethal.

Context: Over 2.5 million farmers hit the road in search of work in the thirties.
Desctiption: shows a rickety truck filled loaded with with migrant families traveling.
Meaning: The old, rickety truck crammed with children shows the financial hardship families faced as they traveled around in search of work.

Context: During the great depression African Americans also faced hardships. The new deal was supposed to help everyone including African Americans.
Desctiption: A billboard with a white family touting America as the land of opportunity
Meaning:shows the irony of the words as needy African Americans stand in line at a soup kitchen.

Context: In the beggining stages of WW2, Hitler invaded Europe including taking over France.
Desctiption: In this photograph Hitler is posing in front of the Eiffel Tower.
Meaning: to underscore France’s defeat and symbolize his control of France and Europe.

Context:During WW2 there was great debate between non-interventionist and those who felt they should help in the war.
Desctiption: This Dr. Seuss cartoon shows a non-interventionist wearing an “America First” hat in a bathtub as predatory sea creatures with swastikas surround him.
Meaning:criticizes non-interventionists by portraying them as oblivious to the dangers that surround them.

Context: As America entered WW2, its primary enemy was Japan.
Desctiption: this piece that tells “How to Tell Japs from the Chinese” shows stereotypical difference between Chinese and Japanese men.
Meaning: Americans had a tendency to lump all Asians together but being able to tell the difference between the 2 was important.

Context:Towards the end of WW2, General MacArthus was stationed in the Phillipines but FDR ordered him to go to Australia.
Desctiption:Photo shows MacArthus returning after promising to do so.
Meaning: this was to build morale and give strength to the cause of liberating the Phillipines.

Context: After WW2 was over it was time for fixing and reflection of what had happened.
Desctiption: Picture shows one of many concentration camps. Germans who had professed ignorance about the attrocities were shown these camps and had to help with burying the bodes.
Meaning: by showing the attrocities it helped everyone including Americans to understand the level of horror of what happened.
