Final 3 Flashcards
Over active brain (over arousal) =
internalize. so much going on act withdrawn.
Kids with Autisim (struggle with over arousal)
Under active brain (under arousal) =
Externalizers. Seek arousal from environment (AD/HD)
internailzers cope by
withdrawing from environment
Externalizers cope by
seeking arousal from environment
right hemi
important for social function (big picture)
Left hemi problem –
do poorly in reading, writing ,math, writing problems – tend to be withdrawn, sad , depressed (don’t say much/ talk much) ARTIST are notorious for having problems with this (they are more right brained/ live in right hemi)
Psychopathology (brain and behav issues)
related to frontal subcortical circuits.
left hemi problem
depressed / catastrophic
Right hemi problem
indiffrerent / lack attention / euphopic (AD/HD)
LEFT hemi (approach hemisphere)-
Possitive affect - about approach – reaching out – pro social
Right Hemi
Negative affect - advoidant hemi
Left up right down
Happy
Left down right up
depressed
Left brain
happy
right brain
higher level learning
Cingulate Circuit
arousal, motivation, performance monitoring,
Disfunction : depression, bipolar, ad/hd
cingulate dysfunction
slow to process,
poor decision making
limited idea generation
right hemi dysfunction
do not do well socially, not good gastalt (see change over time)
Dorsolateral Prefrontal Circuit
planning, organizing
Dorsolateral Prefrontal Circuit dysfunction
limited interest in environment (depression)
decreased verbal and design fluency ( talk lots no content)
poor planning organizing
-Encoding and/or retrieval from long-term memory deficits –
Encoding problem (slow on up take) need more repeated practices, or link old with new info (pair associates) – common in depression
ADHD
right frontal
Storage
(temporal lobe)
encoding
(left frontal)
retrieval
(right frontal lobe)
Orbital Prefrontal Circuit
emotional part/ behavioral self-regulation, inhibition, empathy, social control, integrating emotions into contextually relevant behavior
orbital prefrontal issues =
obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, conduct disorder
Orbital prefront dysfunction
Perseveration or disinhibition (OCD - preservation) AD/HD(disinhibition)
Tactlessness
Irritability
Sexual deviance (extreme interest or disinterest)
Antisocial or asocial behaviors
Inappropriate feelings (e.g., sadness or euphoria) – common in bipolar
Almost always have poor theory of mind – lack empathy (hard time feeling what other feel)
Orbital Prefrontal Circuit &
THEORY OF MIND
People with orbital problems do not (under functioning)
form strong relationships (no empathy)
People with over functioning orbital circuit
(too much empathy) = co dependence (emotional chameleon)
Limbic system for
emotion registration and awareness
Parietal / temporal
understanding
orbital
doing
kid with frontal lobe dysfunction( brain boss)
know what to do and the cerebellum kicks out an automatic response (socially). may know right response but not do it
