1) Glottis & nostril valves opened; floor of buccal cavity lowered &
air flows in
2) Contraction of body wall forces air out of lungs; old air exhaled above fresh inspired air in buccal
cavity & flows out of nostrils
3) Nostrils closed; glottis remains open; buccal cavity contracts &
forces air into lungs
4) Glottis closes; nostrils open & floor of cavity depressed which
forces air in through nostrils
