Filtiration And Crystallisation Flashcards
What happens when a substance dissolves?
A solution forms when a substance dissolves in another , the substances particles separate and become completely mixed with the particles of the solvent
What is a solute?
The substance that dissolves
What is a solvent?
The solvent is the substance which a substance (solute) dissolves in
What does soluble mean?
If a substance can dissolve is a certain solvent it is soluble in that solvent
How does filtration work?
Filtration separates an insoluble substance in the solid state from substances in the liquid state.
What is residue?
Residue is the substance which stays in the filter paper while the liquid passes through
What is filtrate?
Filtrate is the liquid that passes through the filter paper
How does crystallisation work?
If you heat a solution, the solvent evaporates leaving the solute behind, if you allow the solvent to evaporate slowly by heating it you get regularly shaped crystals.
What does a solution have to be like in crystallisation?
You need to heat the solution until it becomes a saturated solution.
What is a saturated solution?
When no more solute can be dissolved at that temperature
